The Major Google Algorithm Updates till this Summer
Google adopts a system of regular updates to make sure that the results delivered by search engines are more accurate. Some chore changes were made to the algorithms on 4th May 2020, which severely affected the rankings of most websites.
Algorithms are updated by Google regularly, as and when required. In general, changes go around 500 to 600 times per year, out of which, some are quite minor that may even go unnoticed, while others may be major. Major algorithm updates
4 May 2020 – Core update
A core algorithm update was done, affecting most of the websites’ ranking. Known as May 2020 core update, it took around two weeks to roll out completely. Changes were done to note content relevancy to make the websites more user-friendly.
22 January 2020 – Featured Snippet Duplication
Ensuring not to repeat a featured snippet position on Page1 listings, this update affected almost 100% of all sites linking all over the world.
9 December 2019 – BERT
With the inclusion of various languages from all over the world, BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) was a deep learning algorithm introduced for natural language processing.
12 March 2019 – Core update (a.k.a Florida 2)
This was a global broad core update and was one of the biggest updates in recent years. It included changes by which certain existing ranking factors were compared against one another.

Google tracking tools detected several search viability and visibility results, impacting the traffic on their site. So, to deliver the best possible results, some updates were applied for a better search experience.

The update was required to target low-value content. This enhanced the site quality, as it targeted poor quality content improving the negative effects on the website.
10 January 2017 – Intrusive Interstitials Updates
The change was rolled to control the pop-ups which affected the search experience, especially on mobile devices.
23 September 2016 – Penguin
Penguin ensured to evaluate websites and links in real-time. The update changed SEO companies massively, as web spams were targeted directly.
12 May 2016 – Mobile-Friendly Update
Mobilegeddon 2 was an update that is also known as Google’s first mobile-friendly update. It enhanced the mobile search rankings and results, taking the internet to the mobile era.
23 September 2014 – Panda
Panda algorithm was added to identify low-quality content in a more precise manner. The result was the reduction of rankings in low-quality sites. Google’s Panda is now a major part of its core ranking algorithm.
26 October 2015 – RankBrain
This was a machine-learning algorithm to filter the search results, thus providing users one of the best answers to their search queries. RankBrain is termed as the ‘third most important ranking signal’ by Google.
3 May 2015 – Phantom Update
Phantom was a change to confirm Google’s core ranking algorithm. Various websites that were facing low content quality issues, and with too many ads, were impacted most with this update.
24 July 2014 – Pigeon Update
This was a local search update for more traditional websites to influence local search results.
